Scottish Powers New Mascot
We were asked to help the lovely team at Eyebolls Animation Studio to bring Bruce the Butterfly, Scottish Power's new mascot, to the small screen.
Blending live action with Bruce's CG world was a fun but technically demanding challenge. We were responsible for developing Bruce's look and feel, alongside creating the lighting, and rendering pipeline needed to deliver efficient 5K renders for compositing. The workflow was designed to balance quality with speed, allowing the character to evolve quickly throughout production.
Alongside the TV work, we also crafted a series of striking images for Scottish Power's print campaign, helping Bruce spread his wings beyond the screen.
Craft And Execution
Bringing Bruce the Butterfly into a live-action world required more than simply placing a CG character into a scene. Bruce needed to feel like a natural part of the environment, seamlessly interacting with the world around him.
To achieve this, we captured animated HDR lighting data from the live-action sets. By converting these lighting references into high dynamic range images, we were able to accurately recreate the on-set lighting conditions and illuminate Bruce with realistic, dynamic light. Alongside the lighting work, Bruce's look and feel evolved throughout production, with careful refinements to his materials, shading, and character design to ensure he sat naturally within the live-action environment while retaining his silhouette, charm and personality.
